Krik? Krak! by Edwidge Danticat
5.0

I did not expect this to be the first book I finished this year, but once I started it, I simply couldn’t get enough. These stories, loosely connected, are heartbreaking. Haiti is a heartbreak all its own, but these stories of people who have lived their Haitian (and sometimes American) lives are just impossibly heartbreaking. And yet, there is just the slightest thread of hope in each one. It’s not strong hope, but it’s enough that it keeps you from bursting into tears at the sheer pain of it all. Danticat’s writing is sublime, but accessible. Their feel for the human condition creates characters who are broken, but also heartening. It’s a truly beautiful book, even without the proverbial happy endings.
