This was not for me. I only finished it because it was a gift, but it’s not at all my kind of book. Reasons it’s 2 stars instead of 1:
  • The ending was decent and I didn’t guess the twist.
  • Some of the descriptions of scenery were well written.
  • The smutty scenes aren’t terrible or cringy if you’re into that. For me, that doesn’t really matter if I can’t get behind the couple (which I can’t hear).
And reasons I didn’t like it:
  • The plot was way beyond my suspension of disbelief. Why does this college only accept kids with a troubled background? Surely that doesn’t make sense financially? Why do they buy them tailor made gowns for a ball? If someone disappears every time they have a ball, why permit it to be this darkened orgy instead of keeping everyone together in a bright room?
  • Instalove.
  • Power imbalance relationship where the power imbalance is supposed to be sexy.
  • It felt like it should have been set in the past since there was no technology, but instead it’s the present for some reason and it’s just handwaved away as no cell reception.
  • It felt like the plot was secondary to the smut.
  • Everyone besides the main character was underdeveloped.
