Gathering of the Four by A.E. Bennett

adventurous mysterious tense medium-paced

5.0

This has been on my Kindle for some time, and wow, did I sit on this for too long! With Gathering of the Four, A. E. Bennett gives us a fresh take on some classic fantasy elements, with well-rounded, interesting characters and a plot that had me gripped from start to finish.

It can be tricky to pull off multiple POVs well, but it was expertly done in this book, with the four main characters coming together in intriguing style, furthering the plot whilst peppering in just enough world-building to make the setting feel rich and real.

With a stoic warrior, a cheeky troublemaker, a prim lady and a naive but rebellious peasant who's not like everyone else, this story could've quite easily felt too tropey and cliché, but the story was crafted wonderfully, not feeling derivative or too similar to other books. Each character felt three-dimensional and interesting in their own right, and I found myself especially attached to Leopold and Eve, desperate to see them come out of everything okay.

I will definitely be picking up the next installment in this series!
