A Gate at the Stairs by Lorrie Moore

I often enjoyed the way in which the author played with words throughout, though that was completely independent of my enjoyment - or lack thereof - of the story itself. It was obvious that the author loves language, which made me imagine her more as a poet than a novelist. The family that sleighs together stays together? Nice play on words, but it seemed contrived in the context of a novel.

Also, I was frustrated at the lack of closure - at all of the loose ends in the plot. What was it all for if there's no wrap-up? Some could say that perhaps that was intentional - just as in life, this story moves on with or without an explanation. But what is the point of a novel if not to package an idea and deliver it within the confines of its pages?
