Inside of a Dog: What Dogs See, Smell, and Know
by Alexandra Horowitz
Since I have just adopted a dog, reading this book was well-timed for me. The author's explanation of the limited science used to interpret dog behavior was beneficial, because so many people claim to be authorities on the subject without really explaining how they come to their conclusions. It makes me think of Caesar Milan or whatever his name is, and his insistence that dogs are pack animals, essentially smaller wolves, and how inaccurate and unfair that is being when it comes to looking at how their relationships with humans have changed the species over the past few thousand years. Neither do dogs think like people, but the way we relate to each other is just as meaningful as we believe it to be, if in a slightly different way. Dogs are awesome. That's all there is to it.
