Tokyo Ghoul, Tome 1 by Sui Ishida
4.0

My 200th book of 2017! Woot woot! 100 to go for goal.

Okay on to my review.

When a anime/show/book/movie becomes popular you'll hear a lot of people say "that's so overrated" or "that shit sucks" because well, people love to judge things before they read/watch/play them. It's simple human nature. Either that or the internet...yeah let's blame that. So Tokyo Ghoul became very popular a few years ago and last year I watched the anime with my wife and really enjoyed it. (Well first season. Season 2...so/so) Just like Attack on Titan it had a huge following but a very vocal "This is for weebs" or "This is terrible" However, I judge things based on the quality I see. I don't care what's popular, what's not popular. I judge it all based on it "I" enjoyed it. Not the world.

Saying that I really love the start up of Tokyo Ghoul. Ken Kaneki is just a regular dude who's trying to find a pretty lady to date. His buddy Hide is the fun outgoing friend you have to have so you look normal in comparison. So the book starts off with Kaneki linking up with a pretty girl from a local coffee shop and walking her home while talking about books they both like. Sounds great, right? Well the women turns out to be a Ghoul, and not one of the nice ones (yes there are nice ghouls) and attacks Kaneki!

I don't want to give more away but that's the start of it. So what did I like? Dislike? Let's go!

What I liked: I enjoy Ken Kaneki because he's just the normal guy trying to fit into a new world. He's a little bit of a cry baby sometimes but he's only 18 (or 16) and trying to learn about his own new body. I loved the art, think it works real well and everyone has their own distinct look. The pacing is perfect and slowdowns when needs to but other than that they move at a steady speed. Touka is also hot as hell and super badass. <3 her.

What I didn't like: Some of the writing, like most Manga, can be iffy. Mostly due to translation probably. Also the idea of Ghoul isn't brand new. Think Zombies/Vampires type of story. This can turn some people off (I think it evolves nicely but not in the first volume)

I really do enjoy Tokyo Ghoul. It's different enough to get sucked in yet it has characters to enjoy and grow with, the art and fights are easy to follow and nicely done, and the story is worth checking out. So yeah, going to read it all! A 4/5!
