Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe
adventurous challenging dark slow-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Character
Loveable characters: No

I went into this read knowing there would be poorly aged elements, but I was unprepared for quite how violently racist this book was. Between horrific racialized stereotypes and myth-making about “savage” (read: non-white) societies, the valorization of the transatlantic slave trade (with all the casual cruelty and dehumanization that entails), and a fixation on colonizing being a moral right of Europeans, this book is not only the first English language novel but also an early piece of propaganda for the systems of white supremacist settler colonial mindsets and methods.
