At the Mountains of Madness: And Other Tales of Terror by H.P. Lovecraft

3.0

I love the ideas in here. I can see why these are influential works in horror literature. That said, a little editing would make The Mountains of Madness great instead of average. It's similar to hearing experimental music that started a genre. You can hear the clever new elements in the songs, but it's not yet to where you can listen to the entire album in one sitting. Later horror and science fiction works use Lovecraft's ideas to much better effect and with cleaner execution.
The ideas in th hese stories are original and make a great story when you tell other people about the book. When you read it, however, there are problems with repetition and a tendency to pass over interesting details with phrases that amount to "it's too hard to explain" or "you don't want to know because it's so scary". A fun read. Maybe worth checking out more Lovecraft later.
