November Road by Lou Berney
4.0
4 1/2 Stars
This book was recently recommended to me and I decided to give it a shot never having heard of it or read anything else by this author.
November Road is a historical fiction/crime novel that takes place in the days before, day of and after the assassination of JFK. Told from three perspectives--Gidry, the man on the run with too much information for his own good, Barone, the man hunting the man on the run, and Charlotte, an Oklahoma mom and wife who has suddenly and bravely left her husband with no plan other than to take her life back into her own hands.
What a wild ride this story is - the crime/mob family aspect is so crazy, it's absolutely gripping and the characters are so memorable, each having their own sense of right and wrong which would deviate from what most of us might find palatable.
Charlotte herself is such a beautiful character - her growth throughout the book is completely inspiring while also seeming completely realistic. She takes one (albeit large) step in the right direction and the trajectory of her whole future changes while she finds her inner strength.
The ending went in a direction I was truly not expecting and I enjoyed every minute.
