Review fresh from finishing the last chapter!
What I loved
- the MCs:
FMC: she’s a tall wonderful woman, mechanic, mom, friend
MMC: we like a grown up man, who had difficult life experiences and ends by being vulnerable about it
- their families and friends are top tier, all of them (who are real supporters, not abusive cold friends like in other books)
- the overload of cute moments and nice gestures all over the book
- many contemporary Easter eggs (bridgterton mentions: the bane of my existence, dancing on my own by vitamin strings quartet/ many other little gems I forgot that you can have the reference of from the last years)
- the slow burn
- the sleepless in Seattle vibes
- in the last chapter when they all scheme an intervention to set them up
What I liked less:
- while there’s a good slow burn emotionally, they have very fast physical attraction which somehow triggers everything else. It’s okay but I find it a bit of an easy writing shortcut to say oh by the way they are both hot af and let’s use the trick of “the MMC can’t think properly or control himself when he’s near her” over and over
- this is my focus of annoyance for almost all books so nothing special here but the communication between both (which could have sealed their chemistry even more) was IMO taken to second plan in some chapters to have pages long smut scenes instead (which felt like filler pages sometimes, I skipped some parts to move on)
- I had some difficulties to imagine some characters or scenes because it felt like description was not enough or I struggled with the writing when it was descriptive a bit (not a native speaker so I don’t hold grudge for that)
Overall I liked the story, very modern settings (hi positivity) and swoon-worthy as written in the book description but I would have loved further layers of complexity or a longer timeframe to see the evolution of the initial fireworks
