Soft Flannel Hank by Eliza MacArthur

4.0

I think I must be entering my 'men-with-beards-that-live-in-the-woods' phase because that was pretty much my sole reason for picking this book up. I wanted romance with a rugged male main character. I'm not sure that is quite what I got, but I'm not mad about it.

Hank is the most sensitive MMC I think I've ever read. He is in therapy. He journals. He is on a journey of self discovery and healing. I was not expecting any of this. He also wears flannel shirts and chops wood to help him regulate his emotions, which was more in keeping with my expectations. Esther on the other hand is much less clear a character - she is a tarot reading witch on the run, but she never really grows as the story progresses and I never really connected with her as a character. This may be because the miscommunication trope was strong in her and I'm just not there for it. Her behaviour was annoying and I felt Hank could do better.

This story was clearly setting up a series of supernatural romances, with several other love pairings introduced. I think I'll give the next one a try - I enjoyed this book even if I did want to give Esther a smack multiple times. Theses more to Hank that we have yet to discover, which I'm interested in as well. More than anything I was impressed with how well the broken, sensitive Hank was written and the journey we went on with him and I'm interested to see how MacArthur deals with this for her other characters.
