Bark: Stories by Lorrie Moore
3.0

I think this collection of short stories is brilliant...too brilliant to be understood. ;-) I don't think I was in quite the right headspace for them. They are primarily stories of grief, and of the complexity of adult relationships, with a terse and shadowed prose.
The style of writing reminds me of the Buffy episode "the body"--which has no soundtrack and everything is surreal feeling, with some things in super sharp focus and others blurry around the edges. (In other words, like grief.)

I can't say I liked any of the stories. I found most of them depressing and the style too hard edges for my taste right now. Hence the rating--if I were giving stars purely on literary quality, I'd give four. If I'd cared about any of the characters, I may have even been inspired to go higher.
