Yellow Wife

5 Stars

Sadeqa Johnson writes a captivating story about a slave woman and her journey as a well treated mulatto slave child to a yellow wife of white jailer in one of the south’s most notorious slave jails. This story will hold you in its depths from start to finish while giving you a first hand view on the life of a negro slave. Be prepared for an emotional journey and a new understanding of the perils of slavery.

This book covers in great detail the hardships and brutality that slaves endured in the south. Historically accurate, the story will pull your emotions and make you reconsider what you already knew. Johnson delivers a masterful story but does not go easy on the details that give this book such historical accuracy. Because of this, I highly recommend that read up on the trigger warnings that include slavery, torture, sexual assault, and more.

Although this was a tough read for my heart I am glad that I read it. We must learn the harsh facts in history to prevent them from ever reoccurring.
