#Starstruck by Sariah Wilson

2.0

1.5*s, unfortunately. While I don't appreciate the trappings of celebrity romance, there were glimpses of potential to transcend the trope in this one, but alas.

The whole celibacy and sobriety shtick was nothing but religious preaching - none of it was properly woven into the story or the characters. Those character decisions could have been used to properly show them building a true lasting relationship, but instead we see the typical romancy lust-filled meetings, typical show-offy dates and jealousy-motivated discoveries of "feelings".

Both main characters were extremely bland and average at everything, which is not necessarily bad, except when they keep proclaiming each other to be all sorts of unique and special, and that ringing at best simply untrue and at worst - fake and manipulative. Because the only way in which he is special is his fame-sponsored bank account, and the only way she is special is her determination to defer sex until she gets the legal pre-nap-free security of a signed and filed marriage license. Is that really special?
And this was my best interpretation even though I actually support the idea of deferring sex until both partners feel safe and secure in the relationship to fully enjoy the intimacy. But in this book that's not what they were doing.

The weird anti- ocean conservation jab seemed out of place and politically motivated in the worst way.
