A Flicker in the Dark by Stacy Willingham
4.0

After hearing so many great things about this book I decided that I needed to read it myself. It’s hard not to read all the books that are hyped by fellow readers! So, what did I think about A Flicker in the Dark? I thought this was a solid debut by Stacy Willingham. It’s definitely one of those fast-paced reads that’s hard to put down and I feel like many people can get so lost in the story that they read it from beginning to end without even realizing it. The short, choppy chapters truly make it a quick read.

As for the MC, she’s an interesting character. I wasn’t sure whether she was the guilty or innocent party as she has a penchant for pills and booze. This combination made her come off as unreliable. Did she REALLY see what she saw? Are the things that are happening a figment of her imagination? Could she have possibly been involved in the murders and she simply can’t remember it because of all the Xanax she took? These are questions that will plague readers throughout the novel. Many won’t like her BEACAUSE of her extracurricular activities and quite frankly I don’t blame them. Her character is hard to connect with. However, I think the way she was written FOR this story does make sense with her history. So, it’s up to the readers as to whether they like her or not.

Another thing to mention about this one is the twist at the end. I personally LOVED it. I had my suspicions, but I didn’t realize the actual DEPTH to the motivations of the killer. I thought it was brilliant! I think there will be readers out there who can figure this one out before the end, but there are also readers out there that will be just as surprised as I was!

If you enjoy a serial killer thriller with enough suspense to keep you on the edge of your seat, then I highly recommend this one. This is a great debut from the author, and I look forward to reading many more of her books in the future.
