Aurora Rising
by Jay Kristoff, Amie Kaufman
Okay, woah. This book.
I love the characters. The plot? Fucking stellar. (Hhaha get it, cause it's in space, and space has STARS -)
The writing was lively and fun, the sci-fi aspects handled super well. New concepts were introduced bit by bit, the world spiralling out comprehensively. Which is definitely my kink for sci-fi right there.
But the romance. Dear god, it's a mess. It's been so long since I've read anything quite as heterosexual as this. The crew is a tangled mess of hormones that I wish would just dry-hump it out and get back onto the plot. While there's definitely attraction to both sexes for multiple characters, the surrounding world building reigns way too heteronormative than is acceptable for me to fully enjoy a sci-fi universe.
Then the ending came in and was a big [pikachu meme] moment, giving huge emotional pay-off. So ... I'm eagerly awaiting the next book and tentatively hoping the romance will be dialled down about twelve notches.

Spoiler
The concept of soulbonds exists for a whole-ass species and you're gonna give me a guy assuming that a woman's loss was a husband and also it's true and then the only pairing that happens for is also m/f? So a heterosexual geared to reproduction phenomenon then? C'mon. As if the hormone-fuelled territorial aspect of it wasn't a turn-off already, even when the narrative handles it in the most sensible way possible with that ... premise. Then the ending came in and was a big [pikachu meme] moment, giving huge emotional pay-off.
