Magma by Thora Hjörleifsdóttir
2.0
dark emotional sad fast-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Character
Strong character development: No
Loveable characters: No
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

Let me preface this by saying that I’ve read other books with a similar premise. And those books did a much better job tackling this kind of relationship dynamic than Magma did. We are given no reason to like Lilia’s “boyfriend.” It is important that we are given a reason to like him because it makes her continuous choice to stay with him more believable. The “boyfriend” is almost cartoonishly evil; if he told Lillia that he killed puppies for fun and Lillia stayed with him anyway, I wouldn’t be surprised.

I understand that the whole point of the book is to explain why someone would choose to stay in a toxic relationship, but this book did not adequately answer that question. By the end I am still trying to answer it.

This book is nothing more than a chronicle of doom and despair with very little light at the end of the tunnel. Can’t say that this book was for me.
