The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
by Robert Louis Stevenson
For such a short novel, if we can even call it that, this book was very enjoyable. Whilst reading it I was remind a lot of poor things by Alasdair Gray, a book I read for Advanced Higher English which was described as taking a lot of its origins from this book. As with any classic literature I did find it a little hard to read, as usual the use of language can sometimes be a challenge and this can make me loose interest quickly, but with the book being so short this happened less frequently. I did find that a lot of things were repeated and at first this seemed silly especially with the book being short but after finishing the book I was able to see that this repetition of events led us to see the entire picture and gave a deeper insight into characterisation. Overall I found this a great read and I can clearly see why this has gone down as a “classic.”
