Behind My Words by J.L. Drake
5.0
I enjoy a good suspense romance, and frequently suspense is not the main focus, it's the romance (duh). But in Behind My Words, the suspense is the focus, but the passion is in there too. The author has written this book with action in the story, mirroring what is going with the characters. Very cool. All of it is tied together makes for an exciting and page-turning reading experience.
Spencer was once a best-selling novelist, but tragedy happens, and now she just highly sought after ghostwriter. She is the surviving member of her family in what is a prominent cold case. A stranger approaches her to write a murder mystery for a very generous fee. She is very involved with the police department of her city as her uncle is high-ranking there. Spencer is smart and witty.
Blake is a new detective, and he's a former SWAT kind of guy from New York City. He's come here to slow down and get away from some pretty horrific old crimes that still haunt him. He's smart and witty.
Spencer and Blake meet, smart, and witty meets smart and witty, and our romance has take-off. Spencer is writing the murder mystery. And a serial killer is loose in their town. Now things are being stirred up regarding the cold case involving her family. The pace of the novel is good; it is not bogged down in extraneous details, which would be easy to do. The book you are reading mirrors the book Spencer is writing. Tension builds both in the murder investigation and in the relationship between Spencer and Blake. There is danger, drama, and some humor. Best of all, the author pulls off a surprise ending that leaves you gasping at the end. I thought, oh my; perhaps we do need a sequel. Nevertheless, if you enjoy suspense and romance, this is a perfect novel to pick up.
