One Dangerous Desire
by Christy Carlyle
4.5 ⭐️
Rex is an American businessman who's been trying to break into London high society for better opportunities and investments for his fully electric-powered hotel. He has a colorful past as an orphan after his mother passed away when he was young, and he's built himself up to become quite successful since then. But he still needs help, and he believes his entree into society will be to marry someone in the world who can help him navigate the ballroom battlefields. When he finds a Duke interested in investing with a spinster daughter, Emily, he could potentially woo, he thinks all will be easy until he runs into May again. A friend of Emily, May is someone from his past.
We met May in the first novel in the trilogy, and she's a bit of a no-nonsense firecracker. But her department store owner dad (who, shocker of all shockers in this series) is a controlling asshole who wants her to marry into the aristocracy. Those things are still very much the case in this book, but you also learn of May's artistic motivations, which lay beyond finding a husband. She has a passion for interior design and painting. But her dad's business ventures aren't doing as well as they seemed, and soon, her dreams of wanting to marry for love are squandered for practicality. That is until she meets Rex again....and it's quite explosive from the start, with her confronting him immediately for never meeting her all those years ago to run away and be together as he promised. Of course, he had his reasons, and of course, they're so very heartbreaking. But despite the attraction still, they can't be together and spend most of the novel trying to woo other people while also simultaneously making the other one jealous.
This story was such a great second-chance romance, leaving me feeling empathy for both characters. The pining, the angst, and then eventually, when they get over themselves to be together, is just so satisfying. And then, when more obstacles are put in their place (Rex's father showing up is interesting and not altogether unexpected surprise), the resolution is just so very good. I was worried the big conflict would be him pushing her away because of noble reasons (and he does do those things). But the fact that May, on more than one occasion, doesn't put up with this bullshit makes her one of my favorite heroines.
I loved this second-chance romance between two Americans in London. Nothing beats a second chance, especially when the hero spends the whole time away from the heroine trying to prove himself and become worthy of her- sigh. Would recommend to anyone who likes angsty romances with a happy ending!
