The First Woman
by Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi
I got about 2/3 of the way through this book, but just couldn’t find the motivation or interest to keep reading. The synopsis and beginning of the story would have you believe it’s about a girl searching for her mother, but that seems to take a back seat after the first handful of chapters. I found it hard to follow the social climate of the story—it took me half the book to even confirm what decade it was taking place in, it’s not exactly clear at first. I think someone who is familiar with Ugandan history, culture, spirituality and politics might find this a more enjoyable read. I found it to be a lot of pages with little dynamic.
