I did not like What happened to Goodbye as much as I liked Sarah Dessen's other books. I've read every book she wrote (besides That Summer) and I think that What happened to Goodbye was one of the worst, only Dreamland was worse to me. I tried to identify with Mclean but somehow I couldn't. I couldn't identify with the whole Basketball story either, maybe because I'm not really into sports or because there are hardly any very popular or famous sports coaches in Germany, I don't know... I as well missed the love story almost during the whole book... Mclean and Dave did not really connect until the book was like almost finished (at about 80%, I think...) As others mentioned before, Sarah Dessen's male protagonists are usually very special characters. They were all very interesting (I really loved Wes from [b:The Truth about Forever|51737|The Truth About Forever|Sarah Dessen|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1309198433s/51737.jpg|1032900], I'd probably marry him right on the spot if he really existed!). Dave seemed kind of boring to me and I think that his whole behaviour did not fit together at all. I found it strange that he wasn't allowed to go out anymore since he was busted for drinking under-age, I just could not relate to that (maybe because doesn't really exist in Germany either!?)
All in all, the book did not feel as perfectly fit together as Dessen's other books seem to be and she has definitely wrote better books.
(I'm sorry if something of my review sounds strange/wrong or is not understandable but English is not my mother tongue but anyway I felt like I had to say something about What happened to Goodbye!)
