One August Night by Victoria Hislop

This book was not something that I would normally pick up, but I was travelling and it was the only thing that was readily available that could possibly spark my interest. Therefore, I decided that I am going to give it a go and see if maybe I am missing out on this author. I should point out to anyone (like myself at the time of reading) that this is the second book in the installment, but could be a read as a read alone if you don't mind not having much backstory.

I read the book cover to cover, not because it was unbelievable and I couldn't put it down, but rather because it was a book that kept you wondering throughout. What is going to happen to the main character? What made the author write about this particular one? Why is it that they are relocating at this point in the story? Why don't they want to go back? To be fair all of these questions I could probably have answered if I read the first book, but because I did not I kept wondering whilst hoping that the next page was going to give me the answer.

As a result I managed to finish the book in less then 10 days, as the book isn't even 300 pages long. However, the book did not answer any of my questions and I must admit left me bitterly disappointed. I know that authors should, and are encouraged to, ensure that they put cliffhangers in their stories but this book was a cliffhanger in its own right and because of the disappointment I do find it hard to read the first book.

Actually, to be completely truthful I have chosen to give the book away as I knew I would not be reading it again. I hope that the person who gets it in the future will be aware of the first book in the series so that maybe they can enjoy it, but for me this book did not make me want to buy another book from this author.
