There isn’t much to say about a book on Malayan indigenous cultures, because there isn’t much texts on it. Only recently do I see more content around that coming out. As someone who lives in the region and comes from an immigrant family, I wish to respect the wishes of the natives. It’s so hard to do so when you aren’t aware and this is a first step.
This book takes us through the author’s journey in rediscovering the forests in Malaysia by speaking with various Orang Asli members, all the while introducing various edible plants and flowers. I loved reading the thoughts of the various people in the community and the welcoming spirit they have shined through her words. The illustrations were beautiful and that was the main reason why I bought the book but the stories and mindset of sharing and ensuring that nature can regenerate - not taking more than they should - is something I hope to embody in my life.
An absolute treasure of a book though it is only about 70 pages
