Eh. So I have a few problems with this book.

First, there is some weird horniness going on in the middle of the book. It wouldn't be so annoying if it weren't for the fact that the sex scenes are basically all coercive -- Kya being underage with her eventual husband, and Kya being manipulated by a man who only wants to own her. They're weird, and without any contrast to any positive depictions of sexuality, it just leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth.

Second, good god. The black people in the book are absolute caricatures. Mammy and Uncle Tom all the way. That may be an oversimplification of Jumpin', but it's not of his wife.
