I Am a Girl from Africa by Elizabeth Nyamayaro
5.0
“Ubuntu is the essence of who we are as Africans, a lesson we learned from our ancestors, who understood that we are all part of one human family. We need each other, and we are responsible for each other.”
Three words: this was beautiful.
From the direct narrative to the lack of sugarcoating, and the sequence by which the story unfolded, it was all beautiful and then listening to the audiobook read by the author herself made it nothing short of a treat. I had to keep reminding myself that this is a memoir not fiction, these things actually happened, and this person is real. I could hear the raw pain, the grief, the joy, and the resilient hope in Elizabeth's voice as she went from a little girl with a big dream to a brave woman fighting to share it with her community, her continent, and then the world.
