This is my second book by Mx. Polk and it blew me away. Notably, this is not “the same book in a different font” when compared to The Midnight Bargain. The characters and storyline arevvery different.
I started Witchmark thinking it was a standalone, and was genuinely excited to learn there were 2 more in the trilogy. If a book can keep my interest past the first installment, I am thrilled. TBH I’m not sure why more people aren’t talking about this book.
Lastly, I listened on audiobook, and Samuel Roukin brings the thoughtfulness and compassion of the MMC to life.
Things I liked:
- The pacing! The story moves quickly enough to hold interest, and manages not to skip over world building details
- The growth of the FMC. Her journey and character evolved as the story progressed and it was a pleasure to share
- The villainess of the villain. Not trite or cliche, still is the antithesis to the main character
- Edwardian England + WW1 vibes
- A queer (m/m) romance written by a queer author
Things I didn’t like
- I would’ve liked a tiny bit more spice, though it is not necessary to the story at all. The love scene is handled well as written.
