Mandela’s biography is a must not only for those seeking to achieve a basic understanding of XX century South African culture and politics, but also for those who want to get to know a man that became both a hero and a criminal in his own country; loved by the people, feared by the government. The man who sacrificed everything in pursue of the freedom for all South Africans. A freedom fighter as he calls himself in the book.
The only thing that I did not like about the book is the fact that after reading the book I cannot yet comprehend where does, or when did it start, the legend of Nelson Mandela. He puts himself very plainly, and does not hide his weak spots, while at the same time, he speaks only highly of his comrades in the ANC, so while reading the book, I had this constant question in my head: why you and not Walter Sisulu, for example? The question, unfortunately, is left unanswered.
Reading about Mandela's life during my first month in South Africa couldn't have been a greater idea, as he gives a very good overview of the country, it's people and it's culture. Mandela wrote the book just as he would tell the story of his life to a friend on a lazy Sunday afternoon.
