Five stars isn’t enough - six stars from me ⭐️  This book is god tier and it’s getting added to a shortlist of my all-time favorite books.

The Sword of Kaigen is so much more than just a military epic fantasy. The story of Misaki and her son Mamoru (and their broader community) is a meditation on motherhood and womanhood, living with grief, finding empathy and forgiveness for those who live and love differently than you do, making peace with missed opportunities and roads not taken, and choosing to stay and start anew. And that doesn’t even cover the half of it. M.L. Wang is a literary force in the fantasy genre and I can’t wait to read more of her work.
