Loveboat, Taipei by Abigail Hing Wen

Surprising. Fun and light and yet serious and meaningful. Ever is a bigger person than most teenagers, even 18-year-olds, I've encountered, but that's what is so frustrating with her inability to be as strong with her family. But, I can imagine that even though it may seem extreme for me, a white, non-immigrant, MANY humans will identify with Ever and her story, and THAT is what is important. There are so many ways in to this book as well: friendship; strong heroine; dominant culture; experiencing one's own culture; self-acceptance; dance; following one's passion; family obligations; romance; relationships; rebellion; toxic and self-destructive behaviors; envy; guilt...and on and on and on. Great read.
