I've seen a lot of people railing against this book, which honestly surprised the hell out of me. Apparently the multiple POVs and Kavik's character were unpopular among fans, but I honestly can't relate to that at all. I loved Kavik, even when he was being a dumb stupid idiot, and I thought he brought a great deal to the story. I've also seen people say they like this book less than the Kyoshi novels, this book will never be the Kyoshi novels, etc., and I just have to say... yes? You're right? It's a different book and a different character. If you don't like The Dawn of Yangchen as much as The Rise of Kyoshi or its sequel, that's fair, but that doesn't mean it was a bad book.
I'm also not saying this was a perfect book. There are some slow parts, and past the climax, the ending is basically all setup for the sequel. I wanted to know more about Yangchen's battle with Old Iron beyond some fleeting backstory mentions, but I'm hoping that'll come up more in the next book. Overall I thought this was a solid installment in the Chronicles of the Avatar series, I thought Yangchen was an intelligent and extremely interesting Avatar, and I'm eager to see what the next book brings.
