Hard as It Gets by Laura Kaye

4.0

Based on the cover and the brief description for some reason I thought this book was mainly going to feature tattooists and their adventures, but that's only part of it.

Nick Rixey used to be a part of the Special Armed Forces that is until he and his surviving team members were honorably discharged. However, there is more to that than meets the eye. While they were honorably discharged, they were part of a massive coverup conspiracy and left to blame for the deaths of their fallen comrades.

When Becca Merritt walks into Hark Ink, the tattoo parlor Nick moonlights in, she asks Nick for help. She's been left a rather mysterious message by her missing brother Charlie, a hacker extraordinaire to find Nick and have him help her.

Together they have to find Charlie and perhaps once and for all clear his and his team's name. What they don't anticipate is finding more questions than answers - more hidden organizations and more agendas. This book is the first in the series and sets up the foundation for future books.

When Nick and Becca meet it's instant attraction and instant lust. All of the action takes place over a matter of days, so declarations come really quickly. What I liked was that author Laura Kaye didn't try to pass off their declarations. She makes it a point for the characters to realize how crazy they sound after only knowing the other person for a few days.

When it comes to romantic suspense, heroines may or may not have TSTL moments or think they can handle everything on their own. I liked that Becca, a normal civilian, did not think she could do automatically go in guns blazing (though she does own a gun). She leaves those sort of things to the professionals and doesn't instantly become a strain on the group because she thought she could handle an infiltration. So kudos for having a heroine, who is strong in her own right and realizes when to ask for help.

When we meet the heroine for the second book I was instantly intrigued by her actions in the book and look forward to her and Shane's story. I hope that Nick and Becca have a strong presence in the subsequent novels.
