Nightbitch by Rachel Yoder

5.0

"She didn't want to deny him things, to make his life harder, but really she already felt this pull inside her, to make him responsible in a fundamental way, to tell him no and no and no, and sure, she was trying to train him against when the entire world told him, was trying to say, Look, I am not all yours, I am only here for you, but of course, ultimately, she was his, all of her." ~pg.163

~THOUGHTS~
Dark, funny and untamed, Nightbitch is a unique and savagely honesty take on early motherhood, womanhood and self identity.

This Kafkaesque novel has a young mother believing she is turning into a dog. Right from the start I found myself pulled into this story. In my own experience with early motherhood many times it felt like I was losing my mind. Whether from sleep deprivation or worry over my baby in one way or another and other anxieties stemmed from there, it can leave you feeling isolated lonely and at times a bit deranged. The mother in this story has given up her art career to be a stay at home mom and her husband is away for work often, leaving her lonely and their relationship distant. After a while she begins to notice patches of hair growing on her body and worries her canine teeth are growing shaper, is it real or is she ascending into madness.

Yoders writing is in a class all it's own! Brilliantly exploring feelings of mothering young children like no other! The grasping at womanhood while evolving into motherhood, being that endless beacon of love. Add societal pressures, the day to day tediousness that being a stay at home parent can entail, helplessness, frustrations, overwhelming love, dark thoughts and mania. Yoder takes all this to another level and I loved every second of this visceral, wildly weird book!
