Spectacularly bad. Wow.

There are so many plot points and characters I hated, all of which have been mentioned in other reviews. But the thing that annoyed me the most - that I noticed on page 7 and couldn’t ignore from then on - was... do you think she studied linguistics? Spoiler: she did. Obviously. Christ, how many times do you need to reference language? Jean’s toddler playing with bricks listing synonyms for ‘red’ annoyed me on p.7, and from that point on I hated any reference of Dalcher’s obvious love of linguistics. Most of it was entirely trivial and served no purpose. Correcting other characters on their speech, for example, or it being casually mentioned Jean speaks a little Vietnamese.

Just exhausting, to be honest. It’s been a long time since I’ve been so happy for a book to be over.
