Rule of Wolves by Leigh Bardugo

5.0

Zoya has always been my favourite character from the Grishaverse, so her story turning out the way it did makes it so much sweeter.

This duology is my favourite pacing for any book I’ve read. I loved how we got to see all the events happening at the same time but in different places and the perspectives of multiple characters. It definitely made the climax much easier to devour as the was action upon all of the pages. When I finished one chapter and moved onto the next I wanted to read on, but there were other events happening in other povs that I wanted to know about, so it was an endless cycling of longing for more.

Furthermore, I love how all of the characters are in different places throughout the Grishaverse and on different adventures. It makes it more interesting to read about and I think Bardugo has tied these characters to each other very well. Just waiting for Alina and Mal with the Crows.

I didn’t find the events of this book as interesting as the ones in King of Scars; however, I still enjoyed it.

There are three things I’m mainly annoyed about:
Spoiler

The Darkling’s fate:

I just wanted more for his storyline. It all seemed so terribly dull. Yeah, he deserves to be in pain for eternity but we didn’t truly get to see him rise before his “fall”. All of it felt very anticlimactic and some random plot point for the sake of taking us into Six of Crows 3.

Nikolai no longer being King:

I thought Nikolai’s whole arc was “bastard who did it better” and that he was going to show he wanted to and could rule without Lantsov blood. I expected him to make Zoya Queen and have them both rule under the Nazyalensky banner.

Zoyalai:

I wanted more.

I loved the ending and I’m hoping it means we get more Zoya and Nikolai chapters.
