The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman

4.0

4.5 — extra half star because I listened to the audiobook which was very nicely narrated by Gaiman.

I feel like I hadn’t read something of the kind in ages and I hadn’t realised how much I needed it. It arrived perfectly on time. It’s not perfect (mostly our main character lack personality, though that can partly be explained by the ending I feel), but it has a lot of elements that I love love love, mainly in the form of normal-looking magical individuals who are, in fact, very very very very old. I just had a really nice time listening to this—really loved all the horror elements as well, not dissimilar to his other books with children protags, The Graveyard Book and Coraline (in fact the main antagonist reminded me of The Other Mother). I really enjoyed the ending as well and how a lot was left unexplained (I know this is a downside for a lot of people but to me it adds to the “realism” of magic so old it cannot be fully explained or understood).
