Our Crooked Hearts
by Melissa Albert
There's so much about this novel that should have been absolute bait for me – teenage girls channelling anger into magic, intergenerational secrets and curses, The Craft but darker, bloodier, and more vicious.
And yet, I couldn't bring myself to truly enjoy it. The pacing felt off and it seemed to start off slow, which is weird because it literally starts with a mysterious naked girl in the middle of the road. Most of the novel is a lot of tell, not show, and the bulk of the action only kicks in more than halfway through.
If you don't mind a slower burn, this would be a fun novel for the spooky season.
