The Buried Giant by Kazuo Ishiguro
4.0
emotional slow-paced

when father jonus suggests remembering doesn't allow for nitpicking that which is good from that which isn't, beatrice tells him, "we'll have the bad ones come back too, even if they make us weep or shake with anger. for isn't it the life we've shared?" therein lies the rub: does forgiving depend on forgetting? is pain worth it to have something good? is suffering? is forgetting it necessary for peace? is it fair? etc etc. the last chapter here was gutwrenching in a very ishiguro way. 'never let me go' fucked me up during a-level and i'm not sure why on earth i thought this would be different. ARGH.
