The Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling

Wow. This is a book in which not much happens, and yet I couldn't put it down. There is no real action, but the whole of humanity is here; none of whom are particularly likeable. That is, until gradual reveals of the events that shaped them render their tugs on your sleeve for sympathy almost impossible to ignore. And that, I think, is the book's strength. I found myself drawn into Pagford, witnessing the minutiae of village life, and the vague sense of loss and bewilderment I felt at being returned to my own life upon finishing it is testament to my absorption.
