Gloria and Robbie are living in post civil war South. The town is not kind to them. When Robbie gets in trouble for kicking a white boy the punishment is harsh. He is sent to the Reformatory for 6 months. Supposedly this will help him change his ways. But there are stories about the Reformatory. About the boys that have been sent there and the ones that never returned.
When Robbie gets there the warden takes a special interest in Robbie when he realizes that Robbie can see ghosts or haints. Robbie doesn't want the warden taking interest in him and he doesn't want to harm anyone living or dead. He knows he needs to get out of there before something terrible happens.
Meanwhile his sister Gloria knows he needs to get out as well. Things have gotten bad at home and Gloria just knows she has to take care of her little brother. They're all each other have now.
Such a unique look at history and the atrocities of what happened to black people in the history of this country. The horrible things that humans can do to each other never cease to shock and revolt.
