Evil Has a Name: The Untold Story of the Golden State Killer Investigation by Paul Holes, Paul Holes, Peter McDonnell, Jim Clemente

5.0

The story itself, of the Golden State Killer and how he was captured, is just insane. Furthermore, it’s insane that this series of crimes - which is actually three separate series of progressively nightmarish crimes - is not more notorious. Thanks in no small part to Michelle McNamara's I'll Be Gone in the Dark, the Golden State Killer has gotten more attention in the past two years. What makes this audiobook so deeply, deeply good (besides the top-notch production value and Paul Holes' extreme likeability) is that, not only does it provide a coda to I'll Be Gone in the Dark, which was so tragically truncated, it's also told in the voices of the people who lived it - both victims and law enforcement. I read a gross amount of true crime, and rarely does it actually do justice to the victims - both those who are killed and those who are left behind in the aftermath, sometimes living with crippling fear for decades. That general failing of the true crime genre makes me squirmy, and it should. This audiobook, however, does justice to the most important stories and truly brings the victims and the investigators to the forefront where they belong. I wept in my kitchen listening to this and may listen to it again.
