An Orphan's Wish by Molly Green
5.0

For the second time reading this book and still, it pulls at heartstrings for so many of the characters, a tale of conflict love and loss but most of all the good deeds others give. Set in wartorn Liverpool, Lana, grief-stricken from the death of her fiance, accepts a job at the village school as a temporary post, however, when the old headmaster comes back she accepts a job at the nearby orphanage, showing the beautiful reality of the children. In particular, the novel focusses on two young children Peter and Priscilla. Priscilla's parents died when she was very young but failed to admit it to herself whereas Peter's father is a German intelligence in England. When Peter's father (Carl Best) comes to see his son Lana falls head over heels until she realises he is a German similar to who killed her Dickie. On the other hand, there's Frank, the local vet, who is deeply in love with Lana only she fails to allow it to take over her life. Lana tries to struggle with her changing roles in Liverpool as well as these two men wanting her so much. The stories of these young children, although fictional, have been through all so much in life, your heart pours with sympathy. Beautifully written and showing that in the worst of times hope can still be found and despite the awful trauma that these children have gone through they are like any other child and the love is stronger than ever. Trauma and heartbreak do not define these children and the same lessons should be applied to both these times and adults too. 5/5
