This was an interesting concept by Howey and it was a pretty propulsive read, but there were a lot of things that were unexplained and the climax felt super rushed. Also, Lukas as a character felt useless. The author glances at larger themes and issues of war, genocide, the surveillance state, propaganda, etc. (and in his essay at the back of the book, it was clear he was inspired by these larger issues), but ultimately it didn’t have a lot of depth. Anyways, this was a diverting read and I’ll finish the series — mostly because I wanna watch Rebecca Ferguson in the Apple TV show. I’m a little peeved that the second book doesn’t really follow the main story and we don’t get back to continuing Juliette’s story until the third book, but maybe I’ll like the second one better?
