The Old Ways: A Journey On Foot by Robert Macfarlane
3.0
3.5 stars; would have been 4 because it’s so beautifully written, it almost feels like an honour to read. However I can’t deny that it took me nearly 3 years to finish (eek). I loved many of the essays, some of them really dragged, and I can’t help but reflect on the fact that nearly all of his walkers, past and present, are men. Young and middle aged women with very few exceptions don’t have the wherewithal to take off for weeks at a time, abandoning caring responsibilities, and sleep out in the open as well. I know this is a slightly unfair criticism…it’s not MacFarlane’s fault … but it does make me a bit envious to think of all the barriers in the way of a walking life
