Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli

5.0

Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda is a story of acceptance, fear, and love. It tells the story of Simon, a 16 year old gay high schooler who is in the closet. While he is not quite ready to share his sexuality, he has found a confidant in the form of Blue - a secret email pen pal who attends the same school as Simon and is also gay. Through their letters to one another and the story of Simon's life as told through his eyes, the reader is able to travel the journey with Simon as he begins to become more confident in who he is as a person.

With many sarcastic and funny remarks (Everyone should have to come out and announce their sexuality, right?!) Simon tells his story in a way that every high schooler (and beyond) can relate to. Because of some mild adult content, I would not recommend using this book with students younger than 8th grade. The book is a National Book Award nominee and won the William C. Morris YA Debut Award in 2016.
