For the Love of Lilah by Nora Roberts

4.0

Lilah Calhoun saves Maxwell Quartermain after he'd been found drifting in the sea. Max is intellectual and a history professor at Cornell University. Lilah flirtatiously aids Max to health and then becomes enthralled with his connection to the man who'd stolen papers from her home. Max was employed to study papers about the Calhoun's unaware he was working with a criminal. After meticulous care from the Calhoun household, he falls in love slowly with Lilah. All the while, they begin to unravel Bianca's history. Finding a maid in a nursing home, they learn of Bianca's intent to leave her husband the night before her death. There was a journal they now believe is hidden among the emeralds. A scandalized family history, followed by a confused heart, Lilah struggles to tell Max her true feelings. Max is hopelessly in love with her but suppresses expressing it. In the end, after a near death experience, he returns the favor of saving hers. Love expressed and adventure still ahead, they profess their love in Bianca's tower. Where it was meant.
