The Ghost Junkies by Elizabeth J. Rekab

4.0

This book was a great little stroll down nostalgia lane - so many relatable references which took me back to high school and growing up in the 90’s. Yes, I’m old, don’t @ me.

I do think that this was written for people way younger than me, it’s probably aimed more towards teens, but I still really enjoyed this paranormal thriller. My only complaint was that the twist was super predictable and I saw it coming a mile off, but to be honest it didn’t really detract from the story or the fact that this was a really easy and fun read.

Mel is our protagonist, she is having a hard time at school and she is losing her two closest friends to the ‘Terror Squad’ i.e. the mean cheerleaders; every American high school has them, am I right? Chelle her childhood friend has become one of them, and her bestie Aaron (who she is secretly in love with) is dating one. On top of this Mel is a seer and can see ghosts, including her Dad who appears to her twice per year on her birthday and on thanksgiving.

On her birthday this year, Mel’s Dad fails to appear so when Seth; a kid who previously gave her the creeps tells her he knows her secret and is like her, and can both help her understand her gift and find out what happened to her Dad, she starts a crazy journey of getting high on ghost energy in a sketchy ass cabin in the woods that is invisible to everyone except Mel and her new seer pals.

When people in town start behaving crazy and out of character, Mel starts to realise that things are not quite as they seem and she needs to figure out what is going on before it’s too late.

Thank you to BookSirens and the author for the ARC in return for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
