I loved this book, and it all comes down to the fact I viewed this as a novelization of a D&D game. Each chapter reads like someone writing a story based on each week's D&D get together and that was the only way I enjoyed it as much as I did. That being said, the writing isn't great, and it could have benefited from a few more edits, and more showing/less telling.
