In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado

dark informative reflective sad tense slow-paced

5.0

I cannot explain properly with words how this book has impact in my life. I started reading it one day because I thought: why not? and it was the best decision ever. Even if it is not planned to be read in one city I just found myself being hooked with this story and wanted to know what happened to Carmen. I loved all the perspective that she gave through the Dreamhouse, it was dark intense but it said a lot without saying too much. Words spoke to me like whispers, it remind me of a lot of experience that I lived, not in a relationship between partners, but still the message was there. I could feel it; I could feel her. Her fear of being in that house, the guilt when you can't seem to be happy with that person when you're supposed to be. Then realising that wasn’t true. And then again realising that you knew all the way through but you still stood there. Alone. Afraid.

This review is getting to personal but well to sum this up, I think everyone should read this. It's hard? Yeah, specially if you relate in some way. But for the people who are not sure to read it, this doesn't have hard hard hard scenes (like you'll not read it with all the physical details) but it's painful, really painful.

Thank you, Carmen María Machado, even if I never get to chat with you with a cup of tea, thank you.
