The first part of the book reads almost like a memoir. We’re given a rich, intimate, and alluring character study of Emilia—a striking portrayal of a strong woman deeply rooted in her culture and family. It was easily my favorite part of the novel.
What I find most compelling about Isabel Allende’s writing is how seamlessly it transcends language. Her depictions of history are always captivating, enriched with a deeply personal touch that never feels diluted in translation.
That said, this story leans heavily into the descriptive and emotional, offering little in terms of historical context regarding the Chilean civil war. It’s not quite what I expect when picking up an Allende novel. In many ways, it reminded me more of a Kristin Hannah book: a deeply emotional character exploration set against the backdrop of history, rather than a historically driven narrative.
I still enjoyed it!! & I think it's a great rec for historical fiction lovers
